Lent: Week Five Continued
As people, it can be difficult to surrender to
community. We want to belong at church, and yet we are hesitant to let
go
of ourselves enough to become a part of the group. How many of us sit next
to people at Mass every week and have never talked to them? How many of us
know others at church by face, but we've never asked their names?
Taking the first step toward intimacy is the hardest,
and yet, remembering the Gospel metaphor, only through letting go can we
experience freedom. Dying to our anxieties and fears about intimacy
will yield the fruit of true community, strengthened relationships and new
friendships.
During this fifth week of Lent, where our initial
Lenten energy has been spent, I challenge you, as I challenge myself, to be
open to the people around you. Say “hi” to someone in the parking lot
after work. Ask someone how their day went, and then stop and listen to
the response. Mean it when you say, “I love you” to someone you hold
dear.
Living community is hard, and yet, living community is
what it means to be a Eucharistic people, to be Catholic. Join our
community as we struggle to be Christ for one another!
